Distinctive features:
A single flower droops down below the leaves - "nods".
Similar species: White Trillium (Trillium grandiflorum) - White flower in held above the leaves. Much more common. Painted Trillium (Trillium undulatum) - Center of flower is "painted" pink.

Uncommon in the south, a lot more common in the north.
