Other scientific names: Chelone digitalis

Family: Plantain Family (Plantaginaceae), (Figwort Family (Scrophulariaceae))

Group: Beardtongues

Distinctive features: Tubular white flower.

Similar species:
  •   Turtlehead (Chelone glabra) - grows in wet areas.

  •   Hairy Beardtongue (Penstemon hirsutus) - flowers are narrower and pink.

  •   Obedient Plant (Physostegia virginiana) - petals do not flare out.


Flowers: Summer;  White;  Irregular flowers;  White, tubular, about 1" long. Flower tube abruptly swollen in the middle.

Leaves: Simple

Height: 75-90 cm (29-35 in)

Stem: Smooth.

Habitat: Fields and Open Areas, Meadows;  Fields.

Grows in Sun/Shade: Sun
